Call of the Wild wins coveted award for work with elite athletes

A Welsh training company has recently secured a much sought-after award in recognition of its work improving the performance of an English Premiership rugby team.

Call of the Wild was awarded the Team Building Experience of the Year Award at the international Conference and Incentive Travel (C&IT) Awards 2017, for its Elite Team Performance work it conducted with Worcester Warriors.

The C&IT Awards are seen as the Oscars of the industry. The award winners were announced at a grand ceremony at The London Hilton on Park Lane on Friday September 22.

Worcester Warriors were seeking to improve their overall performance to ensure they retained their premiership status and avoided relegation – something that would have been financially disastrous. The club engaged the services of Call of the Wild, which helped them secure their place in the league. The judges praised the impact of the work on the client.

Approximately 50 personnel from the club attended an Elite High Performing Team event and workshops run by Call of the Wild in the Brecon Beacons. The participants were from more than 15 countries globally.

The participants stayed at a purpose built, residential centre set in 73 acres of the National Park. During the programme, they developed physical, mental and emotional skills to enhance their performance by working more effectively and efficiently as a unit.

The outcome was that the Worcester Warriors won the rest of their games that season and stayed in the English Premier League. This saved the club millions in lost sponsorship, ticket sales and merchandise opportunities.

The club also developed a strong set of core values. A symbolic shield of their values is now embedded into their games, their ethos, their culture and their fabric at the ground (literally).
Karl Hogg, Head Coach, Worcester Warriors, said:

“This is one of the most effective team activity courses we’ve been on. I can see that the impact will be sustainable and will have a huge effect on the club, its players and staff.”

Geraint Lewis, Managing Director of Call of the Wild, said:

“We added value and supported the team to discover things about themselves that they never would have, in time for the pressures of the league and its demands. The intervention was unique, high powered and very challenging, but above all, highly successful above and beyond the client’s expectations.

“We are absolutely delighted to win the Team Building Experience of the Year Award. To be chosen by the judges ahead of larger UK-wide organisations is excellent. When venues such as Berlin, Geneva, Las Vegas and Lisbon are winning awards at the same event, it puts into perspective how big this is on a global stage. It is also important for us as we were the only Welsh winners. It illustrates that our work in the fields of management training, team building and leadership development is recognised as some of the best in the country.”

Editor of the C&IT Magazine, Susie Harwood, commented:

“The C&IT Awards are designed to recognise and celebrate the best B2B events delivered in the UK and overseas by top brands and their agencies.

“From inspiring international incentives in far-flung destinations, to innovative internal communications conferences designed to engage and motivate employees, the C&IT Awards showcase best practice and innovation in events.”
