Katrina Green, HR Manager for haulage and distribution firm C M Downton has been awarded August’s HR Manager of the Month Award.
Katrina received several nominations, including one from her HR software supplier, who said:
“In the course of my day, I travel and speak to lots of people in HR so I’m used to being treated in a certain way, but occasionally you get a ‘buzz’ in an environment, everybody is on the same team and the synergy just works. That’s the sign of truly good leadership, and that begins with the HR Team. Katrina is always a pleasure to deal with, despite being busy she always makes time to talk and listen, and every member of her team is pleasant, helpful and has a ‘can do’ attitude. I hope you consider her for this award”.
Katrina said: “This was a surprise and it’s lovely!”
“HR is actually my second career, and I fell into it by accident. After being subject to a TUPE transfer, the company I joined appointed a brilliant HRD who needed support, I took on the role and that’s how it all began around 10 years ago .
“I have since qualified to CIPD associate level, and have pursued additional qualifications such as mediation, coaching & mentoring and counselling, which complement the function and are really valuable in an operational role. I’m a firm believer that demonstrable experience is as valuable as an academic qualification.
“My hardest challenge to date was working in a former business that folded overnight, with employees not being paid and losing their job with 30 minutes notice. I still had to help mop up with the receivers .. all very difficult when you are also out of a job, but then the best thing about HR is that you never know what will walk through the door or hit your inbox – it’s never dull !
“I recently helped to launch C M Downton’s apprentice HGV driver scheme which was ground breaking in the industry. It’s a delight to see apprentices pursuing a chosen career, keen to immerse themselves in continued learning. Within months they are usually in the job of their dreams – that’s something I take great pride in.”
