A growing number of people are making a living in the ‘Gig Economy’ by offering weird and off-the-wall services, from ‘screaming into a bush’ to ‘creating promotional videos dressed as Jesus’, for as little as £5.
Research by web services comparison site Website Planet has found that hundreds of self-employed ‘gig economy’ workers are using websites like Fiverr and Freelancer.com to promote their bizarre services, with many attracting thousands of customers.
It is estimated that more than five million people in the UK alone work in the gig economy.
On popular gig websites such as Fiverr.com and Freelancer.com, there are thousands of people advertising traditional services such as graphic design and website development.
But Website Planet, has found a growing trend for more off-the-wall and downright weird ‘gigs’ being offered.
People will do almost anything to make some extra money, even if their talent or skill level is questionable – and amazingly there appears to be a market out there willing to pay for these services.
They include the man who will scream into a bush for a fiver. Mad as it seems, plenty of people have paid Fiverr user ‘e-russett’ to do exactly that.
His pitch is self-explanatory:
“Want your name screamed into a bush? I’m your man. Want me to scream things other than your name into a bush? I’m also your man. As long as it includes me screaming and that scream entering a bush, look no further than my services.”
And for all you relationship cowards out there, you can pay user ‘dyamondgee’ to break up with your boyfriend or girlfriend creatively. While ‘rishabh_sharma’ will help you find love, by sending you 50 Tinder openings including a few he has used successfully himself. We’ll take your word for it!
And how about the user who will ‘Have Jesus read an awesome promotional video’. Don’t ask.
“Jesus can endorse your business, rave about your products or services, or tell your customers about sales promotions”.
Clearly Jesus is popular – more than 1,000 users have paid for this service.

Shira Stieglitz, Head of Content and Research, Website Planet, comments:
“While the ‘gig’ economy has created a marketplace for talented people selling their services in bite sized chunks, it’s also spawned the opportunistic seller who will do almost anything to make a little bit of money.
“It’s unlikely the man offering to ‘say anything dressed as a horse’ will earn a fortune from his idea, but quite a few people have actually paid for his service.
“The gig economy has opened up a wealth of opportunities; and everyone from the freelance content writer looking to earn a steady income, to the guy hoping to earn a little extra cash for a few beers down the pub, can benefit.”
