Global Mobility Set to Grow in Strategic Commercial Value
More than 650 global mobility experts from 335 organisations around the world contribute to leading research project
At 94%, the desire to grow in strategic commercial value – and be seen and recognised as such – was one of the key findings of the 2015 Annual Report from The RES Forum, the world’s largest and most active independent community for global mobility (GM) professionals.
Written by Professor of International Human Resource Management at Cranfield University, Michael Dickmann, the Annual Report, looks in depth at the role the GM function plays today. That role is primarily regarded today as one of due diligence expert. It also looks at the journey the discipline needs to take in order to move to that of a more strategic advisor with a direct connection to the talent management agenda. The four main roles and operating models identified by the Report are those of strategic advisor, expert on due diligence, global talent manager and global people effectiveness expert.
The Annual Report also identifies some major challenges and opportunities facing the GM function. Whilst 80% of multinationals value international experience as important in executive career development, many admitted to having less than 40% of required expatriates amongst executives, managers and professionals. More positively, however, two thirds of companies regard it a highly important to measure the achievement of business objectives during global assignments for both the organisation and the individual.
