South Wales HR Leaders discuss the importance of people management at a strategic level

The South Wales HR Forum met last week on 21 June at the iconic Brains brewery in Cardiff, where they discussed the importance of people management strategy

The event was sponsored by LHH Penna and was graphically facilitated by Eleanor Beer, whom South Wales HR Forum leader Mark Hendy describes as ‘simply remarkable to watch in action’.

Delegates heard that the current business environment is changing at a pace most of us are struggling to keep up with. Global growth, demographic and culture shifts and technology being classic examples.

LHH Penna, a world leading talent development and transition company, reported its initial finding that 72% of the HR and business leader community it surveyed saw Leadership Accountability as a critical business issue in their organisation.

Orla Power, Talent and Leadership Development Expert from LHH Penna explained that this was identified as a global problem. The high performing companies surveyed reported higher levels of leadership accountability, invested more time in communicating clear expectations and reported having a higher level of accountable leaders through better leadership culture, behaviour and organisational practices.

Three key attributes of accountable leaders were:

  • Developing their own skills.
  • Building the leadership capabilities of their teams.
  • Acting in the best interests of the organisation as a whole.

Along with customer focus, high personal maturity and others, accountable leaders were found to be ones who make leadership a strategic priority, define and articulate clear expectations and address mediocracy.

Mark Hendy explained:

“There is no doubt that looking at shortfalls in leadership is critical for the business environment as the world becomes more uncertain. How your organisation chooses to do this may vary from business to business but taking some action is better than doing nothing and maybe you will want to carry out your own accountably audit to at least identify what your people are thinking.

“If anyone would like more information about the research, please contact Paul Harris at LHH Penna (Paul is on LinkedIn, or alternatively email us at mark.hendy@southwaleshrforum.co.uk and we can pass on Paul’s details) or if you would like a photo of the graphic by Eleanor, please let us know and we will get it to you – although there  is plenty on twitter under the hashtag #strategicleadership

“We would like to express our thanks to our sponsors LHH Penna, our speaker Orla Power, our graphic facilitator and speaker Eleanor Beer and to S A Brains for providing us with the venue.

“Thank you for the huge support once again, and we look forward to seeing you at our next event, to be announced soon!”
