Award-winning maternity discrimination lawyer Danielle Ayres of Gorvins solicitors will be raising the issue of prejudice in the workplace at the UK`s first festival of motherhood and work.
The day long festival, which will take place at the Manchester Science Park on Saturday 12th May 2018 has been organised to help mothers overcome challenges in recruitment and in the workplace.
And it`s an event, says the Stockport based solicitor which cannot happen soon enough.
Said Danielle Ayres:
“Research has shown that 54,000 women a year are pushed out of their jobs due to motherhood and a third of employers think that mothers are generally less interested in climbing the ladder and progressing their career. Yet the reality is that many women who are ready to return to work after having a family can find it difficult to get a job which work for them. They can also suffer prejudice both at the recruitment stage and in the work place. Yet with the right guidance, information and support it can be possible to overcome these challenges.”
She added that a 2016 report by the EHRC found that two-thirds of working mums encountered discrimination in the workplace.
The Festival of Motherhood has been organised by the Pregnant Then Screwed campaign and will explore themes of flexible working, pregnancy/maternity discrimination, confidence and entrepreneurship.
Taking part alongside Danielle will be parenting campaigner Mother Pukka, , author of the Motherland blog Clemmie Telford, co-founder of Make Motherhood Diverse Candice Braithwaite, designer and entrepreneur Lauren Currie OBE and comedian Katie Mulgrew.
In addition to workshops and panel discussions, Danielle will be available, with other speakers, for one to one clinics. There will also be plenty of opportunity for attendees to share experiences as well a, crèche facilities for their children.
According to Joeli Brearley, founder of Pregnant Then Screwed, the event sold out within three days of launching.
