How to be productive while working from home

With many companies adopting a more flexible approach to working, working from home is set to become the new norm for the majority of people. And why not? Offering a better work-life balance, employees are reportedly happier working from home as well as more productive.

But, if you’ve found your productivity waning, there are a few things you can do up your productivity while working from home.

Have a routine

Get into a set routine and stick to it. Try and wake up and go to bed at the same time and stick to the working hours that work for you. The traditional 9-5 doesn’t work for everyone and if it doesn’t work for you, don’t try and make it fit. Instead speak to your employer about times that work for you.

Set tasks that you need to complete throughout the day to hold you accountable. Whether you like a traditional planner or you have notifications in your online calendar seeing how much you need to do and how much you’ve accomplished is a great motivator.

Take a break

As tempting as it can be to check your emails in the evening or on a weekend, it’s important that you take a break. If you have a separate office close the door at the end of the day and remove your emails from your phone.

Throughout the day you should step away from your desk. Whether you do the Couch to 5k in your lunchbreak or you just put on a YouTube exercise video, taking a  break will not only help get you fitter, but you’ll return feeling more refreshed and productive.

Have the essentials

Being productive when working from homes means you have all the essentials to hand, from scissors to paperclips, to notepads and pens. Having these office staples nearby means you won’t waste precious time hunting around the house trying to find them – leaving you with more time to get on with your actual work and less time getting distracted trying to find long-lost household items.

Check-in with others

One of the most important things to keep you productive whilst working from home is checking-in with your colleagues. We know that for some, working from home has left them feeling isolated, which negatively impacts not only productivity, but mental health too.

Whether you have an ad hoc Teams call with a friend or you send a group email just to say ‘hi’, keeping an open line of communication can help in the long-run.
